Bhubaneswar, Aug 20: The second phase of Odisha Assembly's Budget session began on Tuesday with a stormy note. The pandemonium forced Speaker Surama Padhy.to adjourn the House till 4 pm.
The House witnessed noisy scenes as opposition parties Congress and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) protested over issues pertaining to the college union election and inaction against the Governor’s son.
The pandemonium in the Assembly forced Speaker Padhy to adjourn the House till 11:41 am, just minutes after the session commenced. The House was then adjourned again till 4 pm.
Earlier, the Assembly session began on a sad note as the House paid tributes to former Jashipur MLA Sundar Mohan Majhi. Chief Minister Mohan Majhi moved a condolence motion, which BJD Chief Whip in the House Pramila Mallik supported. The House observed a moment of silence to pay respects to the departed leader.
After the condolence meeting, the Congress MLAs demanded holding of college union elections from this year. The BJP government in the state has already announced that college union elections will be held from next year. But the Congress Members demanded the same from the current academic year.
The BJD MLAs too created ruckus in the House demanding action against the Governor’s son, who reportedly assaulted assistant section officer Baikuntha Pradhan.
The second phase of the Budget session is likely to continue until September 13, with a primary focus on debating and discussing budgetary demands. The session comes after the first phase was held from July 22 to July 31.
