New Delhi, March 11:In a landmark Judgement, the Supreme Court on Wednesday granted permission for passive euthanasia, allowing the withdrawal of artificial life support for a 32-year-old man who has been in a coma for over 12 years.

This ruling marks the first time the apex court has addressed this sensitive issue. A bench comprising Justices J B Pardiwala and K V Viswanathan called on the Union government to consider enacting comprehensive legislation on passive euthanasia. Additionally, the court instructed AIIMS-Delhi to ensure the withdrawal of life support is carried out with a carefully planned approach to uphold the patient's dignity.

Passive euthanasia involves the deliberate decision to end a patient's life by discontinuing life-sustaining treatment, allowing death to occur naturally.
