Every year on July 23, India observes National Broadcasting Day to commemorate the profound impact of radio on our lives

Every year on July 23, India observes National Broadcasting Day to commemorate the profound impact of radio on our lives. This day marks the beginning of organised radio broadcasts in the country by All India Radio (AIR), which played a pivotal role as the primary broadcasting medium before the advent of television.

The History of National Broadcasting Day

The origin of National Broadcasting Day dates back to July 23, 1927, when the India Broadcasting Company was established as the first radio company in India. Unfortunately, the company faced liquidation within three years. Subsequently, in April 1930, the Indian Broadcasting Service was launched, later rebranded as All India Radio on June 8, 1936.

An interesting historical note is the creation of the famous Akashvani tune by Indian Jewish refugee Walter Kauffman in 1930. This melody has since become synonymous with AIR's broadcasts.

Development of All India Radio

By 1941, AIR was brought under the Department of Information and Broadcasting in British India. At the time of Independence, AIR operated six radio stations in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Lucknow, and Tiruchirapalli. Notably, broadcasting in Chennai commenced 30 years later, on July 23, 1977.

In 1956, AIR officially adopted the name 'Akashvani,' a term derived from a poem by Rabindranath Tagore, written for the inauguration of Kolkata's first short-wave radio station in 1938. The name translates to "voice or announcement from the skies," symbolising the wide-reaching influence of radio.

The Significance of National Broadcasting Day 2024

Since its inception in 1927, radio has been an integral part of Indian life. AIR has lived up to its motto, ‘Bahujan Hitaya, Bahujan Sukhaya,’ by informing, educating, and entertaining the masses. National Broadcasting Day honours the dedication and contributions of radio broadcasters who have tirelessly connected listeners nationwide.

In an era dominated by digital media, this day serves as a reminder of radio’s unique ability to foster community, preserve cultural heritage, and provide a platform for diverse voices. Radio has been especially significant in rural and remote areas, where access to other forms of media is limited. It has played a crucial role in educating the masses, delivering timely news, and promoting cultural and social values.

Fascinating Facts About National Broadcasting Day

Doordarshan’s Launch (September 15, 1959): The national television network Doordarshan began on September 15, 1959. Initially, Doordarshan and AIR operated together until they separated on April 1, 1976.
