Bhubaneswar, January 24: Odisha Government is celebrating the inclusion of three Buddhist sites—Ratnagiri, Lalitgiri, and Udaygiri—on India’s Tentative List for UNESCO World Heritage recognition.

Deputy Chief Minister and Tourism Minister, Pravati Parida, expressed pride in the historic sites, which have evolved from ancient hubs of wisdom to global cultural landmarks. She highlighted that this milestone will boost heritage preservation and sustainable tourism in the state.

Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan also shared his excitement, calling the sites part of Odisha's "Diamond Triangle" and marking the occasion as a significant cultural achievement.

The official confirmation came from UNESCO's Director, Lazare Eloundou Assomo, who stated in a letter to India's Ambassador to UNESCO that the documentation submitted by India met all operational guidelines. These sites, rich in Buddhist history, were central to the spread of the Hinayana, Mahayana, and Vajrayana schools of Buddhism.

The Archaeological Survey of India submitted the documentation, and experts believe that this recognition will further enhance heritage tourism and research in the region.
