Unique festival promoting Sambalpuri language and vibrant cultural heritage

Sambalpur has recently carved a unique niche in Odisha’s cultural landscape by initiating the ‘Sambalpuri Dhanuyatra’, a distinct celebration that goes beyond mere theatrical performance. Unlike other traditional enactments, this five-day festival is specifically designed to preserve and promote the ‘Sambalpuri-Kosali’ language. It serves as a powerful platform for the people of Sambalpur to celebrate their linguistic identity while participating in a localised adaptation of the broader Hindu tradition.

A Unique Linguistic Initiative Started recently in 2024, the festival has rapidly gained popularity for allowing locals to renew their bond with their mother tongue with heartfelt joy. The commitment to the language is evident in its rituals; for the second edition in 2025, the Organising Committee worshipped the Sambalpuri Dhanuyatra manuscript, written by Babulu Bag of Dalaipada, at the revered Maa Samaleswari Temple. Transforming the Cityscape During the festival, the geography of Sambalpur undergoes a mythological transformation. The town situated on the left bank of the Mahanadi becomes Mathura, while Chaunrpur on the right bank transforms into Gopapura, with the river acting as the Yamuna. Key locations like Gangadhar Mandap function as the ‘Darbar’ and ‘Rangamahal’ of King Kansa. Fanindra Panda, a passionate local actor, has earned acclaim as the first artiste to portray Kansa in this specific yatra, delivering a performance marked by grace and grandeur. The highlight remains Kansa’s tour of the town, accompanied by ministers and soldiers, creating a realistic engagement between performers and the audience.

Distinct Timing and Modern Flair While the famous Bargarh Dhanuyatra occurs earlier, the Sambalpuri Dhanuyatra is observed in the second half of January (Magha month), ensuring it stands out as a separate local variation. Technology plays a pivotal role in its success. The festival integrates advanced light and sound systems, 3D effects, and LED screens to create immersive environments that were previously impossible with physical sets. High-quality live streaming and coverage by local TV channels further ensure the festival reaches a global audience, breaking geographical barriers.

Government Support and Tourism Recognising its potential, the Government of Odisha increased its financial support to five lakh rupees for the second edition in 2025. With pleasant January weather, the event also boosts local tourism, offering visitors an authentic glimpse into the region’s rich cultural and linguistic heritage.
