6.5-magnitude earthquake jolts Indonesia

Jakarta, April 28: A magnitude 6.5 undersea earthquake shook Indonesia's West Java province on Saturday night, said the country's meteorology, climatology, and geophysics agency.

Fortunately, there were no reports of giant waves being triggered by the quake.

The earthquake struck at 23:29 Jakarta time (1629 GMT) on Saturday, with its epicenter located 151 km southwest of Garut regency and a depth of 10 km.

Tremors were felt in nearby Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, as well as in the provinces of Banten, Central Java, Yogyakarta, and East Java.

In West Java province, the quake's intensity was felt at IV MMI (Modified Mercally Intensity) in Sukabumi town and Tasikmalaya town, and III to IV MMI in Bandung city, the capital of West Java province.

Despite the strong tremors, no tsunami alert was issued by the agency as the quake was not likely to generate giant waves.

Indonesia, an archipelagic nation, is prone to earthquakes because of its position on a vulnerable quake-hit zone, called the "Pacific Ring of Fire."
