Berhampur, Nov 1: After a long 47-day wait, vehicles have finally started moving on the Kalinga Ghat road bringing a wave of joy and relief to the people of Ganjam and Bhubaneswar. The road, which had been closed due to a landslide, was reopened today, allowing both two-wheeled and four-wheeled vehicles to pass through. The reopening marked the end of a long disruption that had forced commuters to take longer routes, with many having to travel 50 to 60 kilometers more than usual.
The National Highway Department took swift action today, clearing the debris and removing sand and gravel from the road. Although no public statements were made, it was confirmed that after some adjustments to the road structure, heavier vehicles like buses will also be allowed to pass once the guard walls are set up.
Following a test inspection on Friday, the report was submitted to the district collector, marking the official approval to reopen the road. With the restoration of traffic flow, the Kalinga Ghat route has once again become an important link, easing the burden on alternative routes and offering a more direct path for those traveling to and from Bhubaneswar and Ganjam district.
The reopening is expected to improve the ease of travel for many and reduce the strain caused by the prolonged closure.
The September 16th landslide had completely blocked NH-157 between Ganjam and Kandhamal districts. After continuous repair and debris clearance, vehicles have finally started moving on the Kalinga Ghat road. However, locals still fear danger as the region remains landslide-prone.
