Jatni, Aug 14: The 47-year-old Jatni College, the oldest college in the constituency, has failed to get a grant from the University Grants Commission (UGC) due to the unavailability of land records.

The college founded in 1976 by some eminent persons of the area is struggling to record the patch of land on its name.

The college has failed to record the patch of land on which its buildings are constructed. The college management has failed to register it under sections 2 (F) and 12 (B) of the UGC Act 1956 for which it has been losing grants every year, informed the management committee.

Some eminent persons had donated land for the construction of the college. But the management did not show any interest in the development of the college including registering land records on its name, it added.

Now, the college has a strength of around 2700 students with a faculty capacity of 900 students. The management has recruited no faculty members during the last 10 years. Besides, the college lacks a smart classroom, computer lab, science laboratory, and playground.

Similarly, the librarian and assistant librarian posts have remained vacant for a long period and eight peons and three clerical posts are to be filled after retirement of the old ones, said a faculty member.

There were 36 government-aided lecturers in various departments. Now only 11 government-aided lecturers are there after the retirement of senior lecturers. However, the government is not recruiting new teaching staff, said Principal Dr. Rajib Kar.

Many lecturers are working under the management committee at less salary. The management is financially incapable to appoint more teaching staff at its own cost, he added.
