Bhubaneswar, April 5: At least five in 1000 children are suffering from autism in Odisha while 9 in 10000 are affected by the disease in the country.

A child is more prone to autism if mother suffers from high fever or takes fits medicine during pregnancy, say experts.

Besides, children addicted to mobile and TV watching or living lonely in nuclear family are prone to the disease.

Autism is a condition that affects children during their developmental period. A child with autism grows physically but face problem in mental development, said Rashmi Ranjan Das, paediatrician at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhubaneswar.

Early identification of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) facilitates diagnosis and appropriate interventions and can lead to improvements, he added.

Children born in joint families, grow with gesture and interaction with many persons which improves ASD symptoms. But children who behave inappropriately need immediate medical consultation, said Das.
