Rayagada, Nov 22: A mysterious illness has caused widespread panic in Padkapadu village, located in Rayagada district, after five locals tragically lost their lives under unexplained circumstances in the past six months. The sudden deaths have raised concerns about a potential outbreak of waterborne diseases, with jaundice being suspected as the possible cause.

The most recent death occurred two days ago when 29-year-old Nagesh Nishika fell severely ill after returning from his farm work. He experienced intense stomach pain, vomiting, and swelling in his hands, feet, and face, and died later that evening. Similar symptoms were observed in previous deaths, including those of Munna Perpaka, Hira Nishika, Derka Nishika, and Mutuli Perpaka, all of whom suffered swelling in their limbs and face before passing away.

Locals suspect that the contaminated water from the village's two hand pumps may be responsible for the outbreak. The pumps often deliver water contaminated with rust, which the villagers, especially from the tribal community, are forced to use due to a lack of alternatives. This has heightened fears of jaundice and other waterborne diseases spreading further within the community.

In response to the rising concerns, the local administration has pledged to provide clean drinking water to Padkapadu. Plans are underway to supply purified water and install solar-powered water systems to ensure a steady and safe water supply in the future. However, the absence of adequate healthcare facilities in the village continues to be a significant problem, with many residents unable to receive timely medical care.

With pressure mounting on the district administration, villagers are urgently calling for action to address the water contamination and healthcare issues. The administration is expected to take swift measures to prevent more fatalities and to improve the overall health situation in the village.
