Prime Minister Modi praised the triumphant team's historic comeback spirit.

Following their historic and triumphant victory at the 50-over World Cup, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met the Indian women's cricket team on Wednesday at his official residence in New Delhi. Harmanpreet Kaur-led side, which secured India's maiden global title in the format by defeating South Africa in a thrilling final, arrived in the capital on Tuesday evening for the much-anticipated meeting.

During the interaction, PM Modi meets women's cricket team members and warmly congratulated them, lauding their "remarkable resilience and comeback." He specifically highlighted the team's difficult start to the tournament, where they faced three consecutive defeats. The Prime Minister praised their "exemplary mental strength" for overcoming the setbacks and the subsequent social media trolling to script history.

The players shared their experiences with the Prime Minister. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur recalled their previous meeting in 2017 after the World Cup final loss, noting that the team had returned without a trophy then but was proud to deliver on that dream now. Vice-captain Smriti Mandhana added that the Prime Minister's encouraging words served as a huge source of motivation for the entire squad.

Deepti Sharma, the Player of the Tournament, told PM Modi she had been waiting for this moment since 2017. When the Prime Minister mentioned her "Jai Shri Ram" Instagram bio and her Lord Hanuman tattoo, Deepti smiled, acknowledging that her faith gives her immense strength on the field.

The meeting also included lighter moments. The Prime Minister fondly recalled Harleen Deol's famous 2021 catch and joked with Harmanpreet about her pocketing the final match ball.

Concluding the interaction, PM Modi urged the Indian women's cricket team to champion the 'Fit India' message, expressing concern over rising health issues like obesity. He encouraged the players to visit their old schools and inspire the next generation, especially young girls, to take up sports and embrace fitness.
