Imphal, May 18: Over 350 insurgents have been arrested in Manipur since mid-February under intensified operations against extortion rackets, launched after the imposition of President’s Rule.
Officials revealed that armed groups, especially in the Imphal Valley, have begun exploiting personal disputes, such as family feuds and failed marriages, for extortion.
A UNLF member, Laishram Ramesh Singh alias “Tiger,” was caught mediating a matrimonial dispute and later confessed to issuing threats and collecting funds from businesses and officials. Police recovered Rs 21.5 lakh and mobile phones from him.
Authorities warned the public to report extortion or risk legal action for aiding criminal activity. The rackets increasingly use digital apps and fake SIMs to operate anonymously and evade detection.
