SG Pipers edge past Bengal Tigers after dramatic penalty shootout

History was made in Ranchi as SG Pipers emerged victorious to claim the coveted Women's Hockey India League 2025-26 title. In a final that kept spectators on the edge of their seats, the Pipers overcame a resilient Shrachi Bengal Tigers side, sealing the win 3-2 in a nerve-wracking penalty shootout after regulation time ended in a 1-1 stalemate.

The victory was sweetened by individual accolades, with Odisha’s own rising star, Sunelita Toppo, being named the Upcoming Player of the Tournament. Her dynamic performances throughout the league earned her a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh, further cementing Odisha's reputation as a cradle for hockey talent.

Tigers Draw First Blood

Shrachi Bengal Tigers started the second quarter with aggressive intent. Just one minute into the period, they broke the deadlock. Sushila Chanu orchestrated a brilliant move from the midfield, finding Lalremsiami inside the circle. The forward made no mistake, controlling the pass expertly before unleashing a powerful strike to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.

Despite relentless pressure and multiple penalty corners for the Tigers, the scoreline remained unchanged for most of the match thanks to dogged defending by the Pipers.

Late Drama and Equalizer

As the clock ticked down, SG Pipers threw everything into their attack. Their persistence paid off in the 53rd minute. Preeti Dubey became the savior for her side, firing a back-handed shot that deflected off goalkeeper Jennifer Rizzo’s stick and found the back of the net. This crucial equalizer pushed the contest into a decisive shootout.

Solanki Shines in Shootout

When it mattered most, SG Pipers' goalkeeper Bansari Solanki rose to the occasion. She pulled off three stunning saves, including stopping a penalty stroke, to deny the Tigers. Clinical finishes from Captain Navneet Kaur, Juana Castellaro, and Lola Riera ensured the Pipers walked away with the trophy and the massive Rs 1.5 Crore prize money.

While the Pipers took the top honors, Shrachi Bengal Tigers received Rs 1 Crore as runners-up. Ranchi Royals finished third, taking home Rs 50 Lakh.
