Winter chill persists with moderate fog likely in coastal districts

Bhubaneswar: Residents across Odisha can expect dry weather to dominate the landscape over the coming week, though winter chills and foggy mornings remain a key concern for commuters. The Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar, has released its latest bulletin for January 23, 2026, indicating that while no major hazardous weather warnings are in place, visibility issues due to fog will affect several specific pockets.

Temperature Trends and Fog Warnings

Weather experts point out that there will be no significant shift in minimum night temperatures (Minimum Temperature) over the next three days. However, the mercury is expected to climb slightly, rising by 2°C to 3°C during the subsequent two days. Following this brief rise, temperatures are likely to stabilize with no large changes predicted thereafter across the districts.

Currently, Rourkela has recorded the lowest minimum temperature in the plains at 8.0°C, while G. Udayagiri in the hill stations shivered at 5.0°C. On the other end of the spectrum, Jharsuguda registered the highest maximum temperature at 32.0°C.

For the immediate next 24 hours (Day 1), shallow to moderate fog is very likely to occur in isolated pockets of Khordha, Cuttack, Sundargarh, Kalahandi, Balasore, Jagatsinghpur, and Rayagada. Moving into Day 2 and Day 3 (January 24-26), the fog warning expands to cover Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Angul, and Dhenkanal.

Detailed Twin City Forecast (Jan 23 – Jan 29)

Focusing on the urban hubs, the Twin Cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar will experience a mix of misty mornings and clear afternoons throughout the week.

In Cuttack, the forecast predicts a consistent pattern. Day 1 starts with fog or mist in the morning, clearing later, with temperatures ranging between 29°C and 12°C. Days 2 and 3 will likely see moderate fog, slightly impacting early morning visibility. From Day 4 through Day 7, the pattern returns to morning mist followed by clear skies. Maximum temperatures will hold steady around 30°C towards the end of the week, while night temperatures will gradually rise from 12°C to 15°C by January 29.

Bhubaneswar follows a similar but slightly warmer trend. Moderate fog is expected on Day 1 with a high of 30°C and a low of 13°C. The subsequent days will see fog or mist in the morning giving way to mainly clear skies. By the end of the forecast period on Day 7, daytime temperatures in the capital are expected to touch 32°C, with night temperatures reaching a comfortable 16°C.

Overall, dry weather prevails, and citizens are advised to exercise caution while driving during early morning hours due to the anticipated foggy conditions in the highlighted districts.
