Bhubaneswar, Oct 13: In order to turn waste into energy, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation will set up three bio-gas plants in the city. The Odisha government approved a proposal of BMC in this regard. A team of the civic body will depart for Secunderabad on Friday to survey how biogas is being produced using vegetable wastes and wet market wastes. After returning from Secunderabad, the team will identify three places in Bhubaneswar for the project. The BMC has laid out a budget of Rs 10-15 crore for the proposed plants. The vegetable wastes of Unit - I, Unit-IV, Sudarpada, Damana, and Palasuni vegetable markets and wet market wastes of the city will be taken to the biogas plants to be used. Methanogenesis and biomethanation processes will be used to produce biomethane gas from the waster that will be used in cooking and vehicles. However, household waste will not be used for the project. These compressed bio-gas plants have worked well in waste management in cities like Pune and Secunderabad.
