Bhubaneswar, January 10: The capital city of Bhubaneswar experienced an intense spell of winter as the night temperature dropped to 9.2 degrees Celsius between Friday night and Wednesday morning. This is the lowest minimum recorded in the past 22 years. In January 2004, Bhubaneswar recorded the earlier lowest temperature.

G Udaygiri emerged as the coldest place in the State recording a minimum temperature of 3.2 degree Celsius. As many as 28 places recorded a minimum temperature below 10 degree Celsius.

Rourkela recorded 4.1 degree Celsius followed by Jahrsuguda 4.5°C, Chipilima 5.5°C, Kirei 5.8°C, Semiliguda 6.2°C, Phulbani and Angul 6°C each, Darinigibadi 6.5°C, Sundergarh 6.8°C, Keonjhar 7.4°C, Nabarangpur 7.5°C, Dhenkanal 7.7°C, Ranital and Bhawnaipatna 8.2° each, Mahisaphata 8.8°C, Cuttack 9°C, Bhubaneswar 9.2°C, Sonepur 9.3°C, Sambalpur 9.4°C, Boudh and Bolangir 9.5°C each, Koraput and Bargarh 9.8°C each, Hirakud and Balsore 9.9°C each and Rayagada 10 degree Celsius.

The cold weather affected business, even as it prompted a spurt in sale of woollen garments.

Residents reported a sharper chill after sunset when cold winds settled over the city. Night and early morning hours felt severe, while the daytime remained comparatively moderate.
