Internet blackout hampers efforts to locate stranded students

Contingency plans are now fully active as officials prepare to bring citizens home from a volatile situation. With civil unrest escalating across West Asia, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has prioritized the evacuation of Indians from Iran, with sources indicating that the first flight carrying evacuees could depart as early as tomorrow.

Ground Challenges and Embassy Efforts

Getting in touch with stranded nationals has proven difficult. Widespread internet suspensions and intermittent phone lines have forced Indian Embassy officials in Tehran to adopt manual methods. Diplomatic staff are currently moving physically across different regions to identify and list Indian students who wish to return.

"Embassy officials are moving on the ground to identify students and collect details because internet connectivity is not available and telecommunication is unreliable," a government source revealed. This physical verification is crucial to ensure no one is left behind during the chaotic security situation.

Escalating Unrest and Safety Concerns

Safety concerns have spiked following a sharp decline in the Iranian currency, which triggered nationwide protests. These demonstrations have since spread to all 31 provinces, evolving into a severe political crisis. Rights groups estimate that over 3,000 people have lost their lives in the ensuing crackdown, making the immediate evacuation of Indians from Iran a critical priority.

Official Advisory Issued

Official estimates suggest there are over 10,000 Indians currently residing in the region, including many students and pilgrims. In a recent advisory, India urged its nationals to leave immediately via commercial flights or any available transport.

Citizens have been asked to keep travel documents, including passports, ready at all times. Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi recently discussed these security developments with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, highlighting the urgency of the matter.

Families back home, including those in Odisha, are advised to monitor local media for real-time updates on the repatriation process.
