Bhubaneswar, Jan. 6: Marking landmark advancement in respiratory medicine, the Pulmonary Medicine team at the Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital-2 at Phulnakhara has successfully performed eastern India’s first navigation-guided bronchoscopic cryobiopsy on a patient suffering from lung cancer.

The procedure, which marks a major milestone in early diagnosis and curative management of lung cancer, was conducted on a 57-year-old male hailing from Digapahandi in Ganjam district recently.

The patient had come to the hospital with a two month history of chest pain on the right side, persistent cough and shortness of breath. He was initially evaluated at two other major hospitals where CT thorax revealed a 3-cm speculated mass in the right upper lobe of the lung raising strong suspicion of lung cancer.

Given the peripheral location of the lesion and the need for a precise and minimally invasive diagnostic approach, the patient was referred to IMS and SUM Hospital-2 for advanced navigation bronchoscopy-guided lung biopsy.

Employing state-of-the-art virtual navigation bronchoscopy combined with cryobiopsy, the team successfully accessed the peripheral lung mass and obtained high-quality tissue samples allowing precise targeting of difficult-to-reach lung lesions while avoiding the need for invasive surgical biopsy.

The procedure was performed by the Pulmonary Medicine team led by Dr. Swadesh Kumar Mohanty who was assisted by Dr. Priyadarshini Parida, Dr. Rachita Mohanty, Dr. Surjya Sankar Meher and Dr. Jagannath, in close coordination with the Anaesthesiology team led by Dr. Sudeep Mohapatra.

Histopathological examination by the Pathology department confirmed lung cancer within four days enabling rapid clinical decision making. The patient has been referred to the Surgical Oncology team for definitive surgical removal of the lung mass, offering the possibility of complete cure through early-stage intervention.

Speaking on the achievement, Dr. Mohanty emphasized that early diagnosis of lung cancer is critical as timely surgical removal of localized disease can significantly improve survival outcomes. Navigation-guided bronchoscopic cryobiopsy represents a major leap forward in delivering precision diagnostics for lung cancer in eastern India.

The historic achievement underscores IMS and SUM Hospital’s commitment to advanced interventional pulmonology and establishes the institution as a regional centre of excellence for cutting-edge lung cancer diagnostics and care.
