Rourkela, 3 November: The 17th Odisha Environment Congress (OEC) was inaugurated at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Rourkela today.

The programme brought together scientists, researchers, policymakers, environmentalists, industry representatives and students who deliberated on the theme “Environment and Technology.” The three-day Congress, being held from 3 to 5 November, aims to explore how technological advancements can support environmental conservation and sustainable development.

Former Odisha Chief Secretary Gokul Chandra Pati inaugurated the Congress, while Prof. K. Umamaheshwar Rao, Director, NIT Rourkela presided over the inaugural ceremony.

Pati addressed about the critical role of research and technological innovation in achieving economic development without compromising environmental protection. He highlighted the progress made in renewable energy, particularly solar power, and the need for improved energy storage, sustainable agricultural practices and greater investment in research.

He urged greater participation from industries for developing and adopting sustainable technologies while suggesting about the establishment of a permanent Environment Innovation Cell at NIT Rourkela to track environmental research, develop actionable recommendations and support policymakers.

Prof. K. Umamaheshwar Rao shared his views on the gap between environmental awareness and actual behavioural change.

He referred to the institute's green campus and continuing efforts to reduce plastic waste. Environmental protection requires individual commitment rather than discussions.

He urged the students to make the campus plastic-free and encouraged the campus community to create and preserve water bodies, observe a car-free day and adopt everyday practices that reduce pollution. He motivated young engineers and researchers to develop innovative solutions instead of viewing environmental challenges as obstacles to development.

Aurobinda Behera, Chairman of Odisha Environment Congress, stressed on environmental integrity to remain central to technological and economic progress.

He discussed about how artificial plantations are not a replacement of natural forests and environmental conservation must focus on prevention of damage to the ecosystems.

Prof. Himanshu Bhushan Sahu, Convenor-cum-Organising Chair, welcomed the delegates and highlighted the growing challenges of climate change, pollution, water scarcity and biodiversity loss. He stressed that industries must look beyond regulatory compliance and contribute to improve environmental conditions.

Sudarsan Das, OEC organising secretary outlined the Congress's 16-year journey and its role in bringing scientists, policymakers and civil society together while Dr. Babu Ambat, OEC vice-president highlighted the importance of strengthening the connection between science and society.
