Bhubaneswar, Dec 9:The Odisha Assembly on Tuesday approved a substantial hike in the salaries of MLAs, Ministers and the Speaker and pension for former legislators.

The Assembly passed the revised remuneration bill, tabled by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mukesh Mahaling.

Under the newly approved provisions, thesalary and pension for both sitting and former MLAs have been raised to ₹90,000. The Speaker’s monthly salary has seen a major jump—from₹40,500 to ₹98,000—along with an increase in the sitting allowance from₹800 to ₹2,000.

TheSpeaker’s car allowancehas risen sharply from₹17,000 to ₹89,000, while thesumptuary allowancenow stands at₹1.81 lakh, up from ₹40,000. Additionally, the Speaker will receive₹2,000 per day as accommodation allowance, double the previous amount, until a government quarter is allotted.

Revised salary and allowances for MLAs

MLAs will now receive a much-improved compensation package with hikes across virtually all categories:

  • Sumptuary allowance:₹96,000 (previously ₹40,000)
  • Constituency and Lok Seva Bhawan visit allowance:₹75,000 (up from ₹20,000)
  • Committee allowance:₹3,000 (up from ₹1,500)
  • Allowance for meetings outside Odisha:₹10,000 (up from ₹2,000)
  • Travelling allowance within the state:₹35 per km (up from ₹25)
  • Monthly transport allowance:₹50,000 (up from ₹15,000)
  • Member’s monthly allowance:₹10,000 (up from ₹2,000)
  • Electricity charges:₹20,000 (up from ₹5,000)
  • Medical treatment allowance:₹35,000 (up from ₹5,000)
  • Accommodation allowance:₹2,000 per day (up from ₹1,000)
  • Motor car advance:₹10 lakh (up from ₹5 lakh)

Prior to this revision, Odisha MLAs drew a basic salary of₹35,000and₹65,000 in allowances, excluding travel and session-related benefits. Cabinet Ministers earned₹40,000 per month, while Ministers of State received₹38,000.

The latest salary restructuring marks one of the most substantial revisions in recent years, aimed at updating compensation in line with evolving responsibilities and rising operational costs.
