Bhubaneswar: The 2024 Hockey Association of Odisha’s third edition of the Senior Women’s State Championship kickstarted on Monday at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela. Over 10 teams, representing district units and affiliated academies, are participating in the tournament, which follows a single-elimination format over four days, with the final match set for 26 September.
In the opening game of the day at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium, Nayagarh defeated Sambalpur 5-0, to advance to the next stage. In the second encounter, Sports Hostel Rourkela defeated Kendrapara by 8-0 score line. Deogarh beat Rayagada by a compelling score line of 6-0, in the third encounter. In the Fourth clash, Odisha Secretariat overpowered SMS hockey Academy by 5-0, proceeding to the next round. Dhenkanal defeated Gajpati 6-0, in the fifth encounter to advance further. In the sixth game, Odisha Police beat Koraput by a 5-0 score line.
In the closing game, Gangpur Hockey Association over powered Jharsuguda 7-0 to cement their place in the next round.
Speaking ahead of the tournament Dr. Dilip Tirkey, President of Hockey Association of Odisha said “ I am extremely happy to see the growing spirit of hockey in Odisha. This Championship would serve as a platform in identifying potential hockey talent and I wish all the teams the very best of luck.”
