State Leaders and Students Unite for World AIDS Day Observation

Odisha has renewed its serious commitment to public health by aiming to completely eradicate HIV from the state by 2030. State officials marked World AIDS Day on December 1, 2025, with a major event held at Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar. The Odisha State AIDS Control Society (OSACS) organized this gathering to highlight the urgent need for collective action against the virus.

Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Mukesh Mahaling served as the chief guest for the occasion. He spoke directly to the attendees about the path forward. Dr. Mahaling stressed that stopping new infections is critical to success. He also emphasized that consistent care and treatment for those already infected must continue without interruption. According to the Minister, young people are the most important group in this fight. If the youth remain aware and vigilant, the state can reach its ambitious health goals much faster. He urged students, social workers, and NGOs to pledge their full support for an AIDS-free Odisha.

To spread this message across the city, the department organized a spirited mass run early in the morning. The route began at Capital Hospital and finished at Sishu Bhawan Square. Several prominent leaders joined Minister Mahaling to flag off and participate in the run. These dignitaries included Health Secretary Aswathy S. and MLAs from Kotpad, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, and Kantabanji. They ran alongside students to show their support for the cause.

Dr. Nilakantha Mishra, the Project Director for OSACS, opened the formal event by outlining the day's specific objectives. This observation is not limited to a single day. Districts across Odisha will host activities for an entire week. Furthermore, Red Ribbon Clubs in 700 colleges and 800 schools are holding competitions to engage students. These efforts ensure the message of prevention reaches every corner of the state.
