German Chancellor joins Prime Minister for cultural events today.

Diplomatic ties between India and Germany reached new heights this Monday as Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosted German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Gujarat. The camaraderie between the two leaders was on full display, moving beyond formal conference rooms to the vibrant Sabarmati Riverfront.

Marking his first official visit to India since taking office, Chancellor Merz joined PM Modi for the colorful International Kite Festival 2026. In a gesture that blended cultural immersion with diplomacy, both leaders tried their hands at flying kites, a sight that drew cheers from the gathered crowd.

Following the festivities, the bond between the two nations was further symbolized by a shared car ride. PM Modi Friedrich Merz traveled together after concluding their engagements, a moment the Prime Minister highlighted on social media. Sharing a photograph from inside the vehicle, PM Modi remarked on the deepening friendship, attributing it to shared values, extensive cooperation, and mutual understanding.

This visit holds historical significance as it coincides with the celebration of 75 years of diplomatic relations and a quarter-century of the India-Germany Strategic Partnership. Before the cultural events, the leaders engaged in serious delegation-level talks. These discussions covered a broad spectrum of critical sectors, including trade, investment, technology, defense cooperation, and climate action.

The personal rapport evident during the car ride and the kite festival signals a forward-looking partnership. This momentum is expected to benefit not just the two nations but the wider global community.

Chancellor Merz is on a two-day schedule. After wrapping up his Gujarat engagements, he is set to visit Bengaluru on January 13. His itinerary includes visits to the Bosch facility and the Centre for Nano Science and Engineering (CeNSE) before he departs for Germany.
