Educational council expresses deep regret over inappropriate judiciary textbook content

Significant changes are unfolding in the national education landscape as the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) formally addressed a major controversy. The organisation has now issued a full and unconditional apology regarding specific sections found in a recently released Class 8 Social Science textbook. This move follows intense scrutiny over how the legal system was portrayed within its pages.

Council officials confirmed via a public statement that the book titled "Exploring Society: India and Beyond" (Part II) has been completely retracted. This means the publication is no longer available for purchase or use in schools. The primary source of the friction was Chapter IV, which focused on the role of the judiciary but included a sub-chapter discussing corruption within the legal branch.

Supreme Court Mandates Strict Ban

Legal intervention played a decisive role in this recall. On February 26, the Supreme Court of India issued a comprehensive "blanket ban" on the printing and digital sharing of this specific title. The court’s directive was clear: any attempt to bypass this restriction by using electronic media or changing the book's title would be viewed as a willful defiance of judicial orders. Furthermore, the court has demanded a transparent look into how this content was approved, requesting the names and credentials of the committee members involved in the development process.

Instructions for Content Disposal

NCERT is now actively working to scrub the material from all platforms. They have issued a media advisory asking individuals, schools, or organizations currently holding copies of the textbook to return them to the Department of Education in Social Sciences in New Delhi. Additionally, the council has requested that any digital snippets or chapters shared on social media be deleted immediately.

Commitment to Educational Standards

Despite the setback, the council reiterated its dedication to providing high-quality educational resources. They emphasized that future materials will be vetted with greater sensitivity and accuracy to ensure they meet the expected standards for Indian students. This incident serves as a reminder of the rigorous oversight required when drafting national curricula.
