Sundargarh, Dec 20: A 23-year-old youth was arrested in Odisha’s Sundargarh district for allegedly raping and impregnating a Class 10 student.

The suspect, identified as Kuldeep Hansda of Kumjharia, is accused of using social media to manipulate and exploit the minor.

The ordeal began in June when the victim and Hansda connected on Facebook. After building a rapport through regular messaging, Hansda reportedly lured the girl to a physical meeting. Upon her arrival, he allegedly took her to a secluded forested area where the assault occurred. Following the act, Hansda reportedly threatened the girl with "dire consequences" to ensure her silence before fleeing.

The crime remained hidden for months until the teenager complained of severe abdominal pain. Her parents rushed her to Rourkela Government Hospital, where medical examinations revealed she was five months pregnant. Faced with the diagnosis, the girl disclosed the details of her interaction with Hansda.

Following a formal complaint, Kuanrmunda police acted swiftly, raiding the suspect’s village and apprehending him on Friday. Birmitrapur IIC Ramprasad Nag confirmed that Hansda has been forwarded to court and charged under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The survivor is currently receiving support at a Sakhi center.
