Union Minister Blames Illegal Coal Mining for Meghalaya Tragedy, Demands State Action

Union Minister demands strict action against rampant mining mafia today

Union Coal Minister G Kishan Reddy has strongly condemned the tragic incident in Meghalaya where an explosion in a mine claimed the lives of 18 labourers. He pointed out that the accident occurred in an unauthorized facility and placed the responsibility on the state government to halt such dangerous activities.

Speaking to the press on Thursday, Reddy clarified that the central government does not operate any coal mines in Meghalaya. He emphasized that not a single coal block has been auctioned for commercial use or assigned to any Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) in the region. According to the Minister, the site in East Jaintia Hills was run entirely by the mining mafia, exploiting innocent workers in hazardous conditions.

Reddy expressed frustration that despite repeated warnings and formal letters from the Union government, illegal coal mining continues to thrive in certain states. He has officially sought a detailed report from the Meghalaya administration regarding the blast in the Mynsyngat area. He reiterated that there should be no compromise when it comes to worker safety and urged all state governments to crack down on these unlawful operations immediately.
