PV Sindhu  reaches Bengaluru safely after missing major tournament

Bengaluru has welcomed back two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu after a frightening period of uncertainty in the Middle East. The celebrated athlete arrived in her home city following a multi-day crisis in Dubai, where she was caught in the middle of sudden regional conflict and airspace shutdowns. This unexpected detour has unfortunately resulted in her withdrawal from the prestigious All England Championships.

Escape from a Conflict Zone

Travel plans for the Indian badminton star took a dangerous turn while she was transiting through Dubai on her way to Birmingham. What was meant to be a routine connection on February 28 became a fight for safety as the regional security situation deteriorated rapidly. Sindhu and her support staff experienced a terrifying moment when an explosion occurred near their accommodation on March 1. Reports indicate that her coach was particularly close to the resulting smoke and debris, necessitating a quick evacuation to a more secure area.

Gratitude Amidst Tournament Disappointment

Upon her return, Sindhu expressed deep appreciation for the teams that facilitated her rescue and journey home. She highlighted the critical roles played by the Indian High Commission, Dubai airport officials, and immigration staff in ensuring her team’s well-being during the chaos. While she is relieved to be back on Indian soil, the physical and mental toll of the event means she will not be competing in the upcoming matches in England.

Focus Shifts to Recovery

Missing the chance to face Thailand's Supanida Katethong in the opening round is a significant blow, but the athlete is prioritizing her health. She mentioned that she now needs time to rest and "reset" before deciding on her next professional appearances. In her absence, the Indian hopes at the All England Championships now rest with Lakshya Sen and Ayush Shetty, both of whom managed to reach the United Kingdom via different travel paths.
