Leaders to focus on military ties and technology partnership

French President Emmanuel Macron touched down in Mumbai late Monday night, kicking off a significant three-day tour aimed at strengthening the strategic partnership between India and France. The visit focuses heavily on deepening cooperation in artificial intelligence (AI), defence, and innovation.

Upon his arrival, the French leader was warmly received by Maharashtra Governor Acharya Devvrat and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. This marks Macron’s fourth official visit to India, a testament to the growing rapport between him and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The two leaders are scheduled to hold extensive bilateral talks in Mumbai today. Discussions will center on the 'Horizon 2047' Roadmap, a long-term plan to boost ties as both nations approach a century of independence. A key highlight of the Mumbai leg is the launch of the India-France Year of Innovation 2026, an initiative designed to foster collaboration among startups, researchers, and tech industries.

Defence cooperation remains a top priority during this tour. Speculation is high regarding a potential multi-billion euro agreement for 114 Dassault Rafale fighter jets. If finalized, most of these aircraft would be manufactured in India, significantly boosting the country's aerospace capabilities. Additionally, Modi and Macron will virtually inaugurate a new final assembly line for helicopters in Karnataka. This facility, a joint venture between the Tata Group and Airbus, will produce H125 helicopters, further cementing the 'Make in India' vision.

Following his engagements in Mumbai, President Macron will travel to New Delhi to participate in the India AI Impact Summit 2026 at Bharat Mandapam. This five-day event focuses on using technology for human progress and builds on previous summits held in Paris.

Beyond defence and technology, the leaders are expected to discuss broader economic issues, including the recent India-EU free trade agreement and global geopolitical challenges. With bilateral trade already valued at €15 billion annually, this visit aims to push economic and strategic ties to new heights.
