PM emphasizes healthy debate while Opposition plans protests over electoral rolls

The political atmosphere in the capital is charged as the Parliament Winter Session commences today. Addressing the media at the Hans Dwar of the Parliament House, Prime Minister Narendra Modi set the tone for the proceedings, delivering a sharp message to political adversaries. He urged the Opposition to leave behind the bitterness of recent electoral setbacks and contribute constructively to legislative debates.

The Prime Minister emphasized that the essence of a thriving democracy lies in healthy discussion. Referring to the recent elections in Bihar, he hailed the record voter turnout as a testament to the strength of Indian democracy. He specifically pointed to the increased participation of women voters as a promising sign for the nation’s future. His remarks were a clear call for the Opposition to prioritize the session's agenda over political grievances.

However, the session is expected to face significant turbulence. Following an all-party meeting chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday, the Opposition has signaled its intent to corner the government. Forming a united front, opposition leaders have threatened to stall proceedings if their demand for a discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls is not met.

The government, however, has drawn a firm line regarding this demand. Officials have indicated that a debate on the SIR is unlikely to be permitted. Their stance is that the revision of electoral rolls is an administrative function performed by the Election Commission of India. As the Commission operates as an autonomous constitutional body, the central government maintains it cannot answer for the EC's administrative exercises on the floor of the House.

Beyond the electoral roll controversy, the Opposition has prepared a list of other pressing issues to raise. These include the recent security incident at the Red Fort, rising air pollution levels across the country, and concerns regarding the government’s current foreign policy direction. With the government calling for debate and the Opposition gearing up for protest, the Eighteenth Lok Sabha is poised for a confrontational start.
