Jagatsinghpur, Nov 5: The Odia Jatra fraternity is mourning the loss of veteran theatre artist Devi Prasad Rath, who passed away at the age of 71. His mortal remains are currently at his native village in Paradip Garh, Jagatsinghpur district.

According to family sources, loud DJ sound during a local event is suspected to have triggered his death. The news has cast a pall of grief across the Odia Jatra industry, with colleagues and fans remembering him as a towering figure of the stage.

Fondly known as the father figure of the Odia Jatra world, Rath was celebrated for his versatility and commanding performances. Over a career spanning more than five decades, he portrayed a wide range of characters-from hero and heroine to anti-hero- leaving an unforgettable impact on audiences.

Rath began his artistic journey in the 1970s with Bhinapani Kalakunj, Tarapur Opera, and concluded his illustrious career with Parvati Gananatya. Throughout his life, he performed in over 200 plays, including notable productions such as Jail Tiger, Lalulaka, Dimiri Phula, Bata Chhada Sanda Asuchhi, Akuha Katha, Kemiti E Bandhana, Ajaba Kahani, Tulasi, Balatkar, Mashani Phula, and Chhata Chihnare Vote Dio.

Apart from acting, he also directed several plays and collaborated with numerous opera troupes across the state. Known for his emotional depth and natural acting style, Devi Prasad Rath’s performances resonated deeply with audiences, earning him immense respect in Odisha’s cultural landscape.

The Jatra community has expressed profound sorrow over his demise, remembering him as a legendary artist whose contribution to Odia theatre will be cherished for generations.
