India's first family electric SUV brings space, tech, and range

The wait is finally over for automobile enthusiasts looking for a sustainable yet spacious family vehicle. Mahindra has officially introduced the Mahindra XEV 9S, marking a significant milestone in the Indian automotive sector. Priced aggressively at an introductory starting point of Rs 19.95 lakh (ex-showroom), this model stands out as the country's first mass-market electric SUV featuring three rows of seating.

Built on the dedicated INGLO electric architecture, the XEV 9S is actually priced lower than its sibling, the XEV 9e, offering incredible value. For buyers in Odisha eager to get behind the wheel, test drives are scheduled to begin on December 5, 2025. Official bookings will commence on January 14, 2026, with the first set of deliveries expected by January 23, 2026.

A Bold New Look

Visually, the SUV commands attention with a design evolution inspired by the earlier XUV.e8 concepts. The front profile is distinct, featuring triangular LED headlamps and a closed grille that signifies its electric nature. What makes the XEV 9S a true family hauler is its dimensions; a long wheelbase of 2,762mm ensures ample cabin space. Practicality is a major highlight, with a massive 527-litre boot space available when the third row is folded, alongside a segment-best "frunk" (front trunk) offering 150 litres of storage.

Futuristic Interiors and Technology

Stepping inside the XEV 9S reveals a cabin designed for the digital age. The dashboard is dominated by a triple-screen layout that spans the entire width, catering to both the driver and the front passenger. Mahindra has ensured luxury isn't compromised, offering features like an openable panoramic sunroof, a premium Harman Kardon sound system, and a unique "Boss Mode" for rear passengers to adjust front seats for extra legroom.

Performance and Battery Options

Mahindra understands that range anxiety is a concern for buyers. Consequently, the XEV 9S comes with three versatile battery pack options: 59kWh, 70kWh, and 79kWh. These batteries support fast charging up to 175kW, making long drives across districts seamless. In terms of power, the vehicle is no slouch, boasting a 0 to 100 kph sprint time of just 7 seconds in its higher variants, with a top speed capped at 202 kph.

Market Position

Currently, the Mahindra XEV 9S occupies a unique space in the market. While competitors like the BYD eMax 7 lean towards the MPV style, the XEV 9S is a true SUV without a direct rival in the sub-30 lakh electric 7-seater category.
