Pangolin smuggling racket busted in Athagarh, two arrested

Athagarh, Jan 17: Athagarh Forest Division in Cuttack district today arrested two pangolin smugglers and seized a dead pangolin from their possession. The accused have been identified as Santosh Das (48) and Hadibandhu Jena (35). Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Sasmita Lenka said that they are also trying to nab other associates of both the accused. “Acting in a tip-off we conducted a raid and arrested both the accused while they were planning to sell the animal. The dead pangolin weighed over seven kilograms. Forest officials said that the Pangolin, a Schedule I animal, is one of the most trafficked animals in the world. “The animal scale is used for ornamental purpose while the animal scale has also demand for medicinal purposes to treat cancer, stomach ailments, and blood-related problems. Indian Pangolin is the world’s most trafficked mammal for its medicinal values, scales and meat,” added Lenka. Earlier the Athagarh Forest Division had busted a pangolin smuggling racket having international links and had arrested 18 gang members.
