Raipur, Dec 4: A major anti-Naxal operation in the West Bastar division, near the Bijapur-Dantewada inter-district border, turned deadly on Wednesday, resulting in the deaths of 12 Maoists and three security personnel. The operation, which was launched early in the morning, also left two security jawans injured.

The gunfight occurred following an intense exchange of fire between a joint team of security forces and Maoists. The team comprised personnel from the Dantewada–Bijapur District Reserve Guard (DRG), the Special Task Force (STF), the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and the elite CoBRA commandos.

Bijapur District Superintendent of Police Jitendra Yadav confirmed the details, stating that the operation, which began with a search, led to a fierce encounter. "The intermittent firing continues, and the search operation is ongoing as forces continue their aggressive offensive," Yadav said.

Bastar Range IGP Sundarraj Pattilingam reported that security forces had recovered 12 Maoist bodies, along with a significant cache of arms and ammunition, including AK-47 rifles, Self Loading Rifles (SLR), Light Machine Guns (LMG), INSAS assault rifles, .303 rifles, and explosives. He assured that the situation was under control and that efforts were ongoing to secure the area.

“Additional reinforcement has been rushed to the scene, and efforts are underway to cordon off the region,” Pattilingam added, highlighting the challenging geographical terrain where the operation is taking place.

The three slain security personnel, who were part of the DRG, have been identified as Head Constable Monu Vadadi, Constable Dukaru Gonde, and Constable Ramesh Sodi. Two other jawans, Assistant Sub-Inspector Janardan Korram and Constable Somdev Yadav, sustained injuries and were rushed to the hospital. Their condition is reported to be stable.

The operation was initiated based on intelligence inputs, and further operational details have been withheld for the safety of personnel involved. More information will be shared once the operation concludes, the IGP stated.
