Bhubaneswar, Oct 14:  The Odisha government has decided to establish its second Regional Plant Resource Centre (RPRC) at Sanaghagara in Keonjhar district.

The project, envisioned as a flagship initiative by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, will be developed over an expansive 134-acre area and is slated for completion by 2027.

Chief Minister Majhi today held a high-level discussion at Lok Seva Bhawan with officials from the Forest, Environment and Climate Change Department and the Keonjhar District Administration regarding the establishment of the centre.

The new RPRC will showcase various species of orchids found across the state, along with roses, bamboo, cactus, and wild fruits, enhancing the natural beauty of the region.

According to official sources, the upcoming centre will focus on biodiversity conservation, community engagement, eco-tourism promotion, and research and education development. It aims to provide visitors with a unique natural experience through thematic gardens and interactive exhibits.

Chief Minister Majhi emphasized that the centre should function as a year-round tourist destination, remaining open to both visitors and local residents. He also directed the district administration to take necessary steps to mitigate the issue of elephant intrusion in the area by creating deep trenches to prevent human-elephant conflicts.

The Chief Minister further stressed the importance of ensuring that the Machkandana River, which flows through the site, retains an adequate and consistent water supply throughout the year to support the ecosystem.
