Kolkata (West Bengal), March 14: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for a series of development projects worth ₹18,680 crore in Kolkata, West Bengal.

Addressing a public gathering, the Prime Minister said the initiatives would provide fresh momentum to development in West Bengal. He noted that the projects are expected to strengthen trade and industrial activity, improve connectivity, and create new opportunities for people.

Highlighting key infrastructure developments, Modi said the completion of the Kharagpur–Moregram Expressway would significantly accelerate economic activity across the state.

“These projects will give new momentum to West Bengal and Eastern India. They will boost trade and industry, make life easier for millions of people, and open up new opportunities,” the Prime Minister said, adding that the Centre is committed to ensuring that West Bengal keeps pace with the rapid modernisation of India’s railway network.

Modi also stressed the importance of developing port and inland water transport in Eastern India, noting that the region’s potential had remained underutilised for decades but is now gaining renewed focus through expanded waterways and port infrastructure.

Ports such as Kolkata Port and Haldia Dock Complex have long served as key trade gateways for the region, he said. The mechanisation of Berth No. 2 at the Haldia Dock Complex is expected to speed up cargo handling, expand port capacity, and strengthen trade-related infrastructure.

The development package includes National Highway projects covering more than 420 kilometres, with an investment of around ₹16,990 crore. These road initiatives aim to improve safety, cut travel time and promote tourism in the region.

Officials said the Kharagpur–Moregram Economic Corridor will shorten travel distance by nearly 120 km and reduce travel time by seven to eight hours. The proposed Dubrajpur Bypass is expected to ease congestion in the town.

The railway component of the initiative includes launching the Purulia–Delhi Express, redeveloping six stations, and constructing two new railway lines to strengthen connectivity and improve safety.

According to officials, the projects collectively seek to enhance connectivity, boost trade, and accelerate economic growth in West Bengal and the wider eastern region of the country.Bottom of Form
