Warmer nights expected as fog grips coastal districts this week

Bhubaneswar: Residents across Odisha can expect a shift in weather conditions over the coming days. The Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar has predicted a gradual transition from the biting cold to slightly warmer nights, alongside specific alerts for fog in coastal and interior regions.

Temperature Trends: Cold Wave Recedes

While winter chills are still being felt, the intensity is set to decrease. According to the latest bulletin released on January 27, 2026, the state will witness a gradual rise in the Minimum Temperature (Night Temperature) by 2°C to 3°C over the next three days. Following this rise, no significant changes are expected.

Currently, the cold is still prevalent in the hill stations. G. Udayagiri recorded the lowest minimum temperature in the state at 6.8°C, while Phulbani remained the coldest in the plains at 10.0°C. On the other end of the spectrum, Paralakhemundi recorded the highest maximum temperature at 31.6°C.

Note: The capital city, Bhubaneswar, recorded a maximum of 31.2°C and a minimum of 14.6°C, while Cuttack saw a minimum of 13.6°C.

Fog Warnings for Next 5 Days

While the days remain dry, visibility will be an issue for early morning commuters. The IMD has issued a forecast for shallow to moderate fog across several districts.

  • Day 1 & 2 (Jan 28-29): Fog is very likely in isolated pockets of Puri, Bhadrak, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada, Sundargarh, Kalahandi, and Ganjam.
  • Day 3 to 5 (Jan 30 - Feb 1): The foggy conditions will persist, primarily affecting coastal districts including Bhadrak, Kendrapada, Puri, Cuttack, and interior areas like Kalahandi.

Rainfall and General Outlook

Dry weather prevailed over the districts of Odisha in the last 24 hours, and this trend is expected to continue. The rainfall forecast for the next seven days indicates that dry weather is very likely to prevail across all districts. There are currently no heavy rainfall warnings issued for the state.

As the mercury climbs slightly at night, citizens are advised to stay updated on local visibility conditions, especially when driving during early morning hours.
