Bhubaneswar, Jan 16: Odisha is currently facing a severe cold wave, with most parts of the state experiencing unusually low temperatures. This morning, by 5:30 AM, Jharsuguda recorded the lowest temperature at 6.8°C, followed by Kendujhar at 9.4°C, Chandbali 12.2°C, and Paradeep 12.4°C. In the state capital Bhubaneswar, the mercury settled at 12.4°C.

After a brief respite from the chill in mid-January, residents are once again struggling with the harsh winter. The cold has disrupted daily life, making it difficult to step outdoors. Warm clothing has become essential, and even handling water is uncomfortable due to the low temperatures.

Meteorologists predict that the cold wave may intensify again from 22nd January. According to the Weather Department, districts including Anugul, Jharsuguda, Dhenkanal, Sundargarh, Khordha, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, and Kendrapara may experience a sharp drop in temperatures on Friday night. Moderate frost is also likely in Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Kalahandi, Sundargarh, Mayurbhanj, and Kandhamal districts.

Forecasts indicate that in the coming days, the minimum temperature across the state may rise slightly by 2–4°C. Between 16th and 22nd January, night temperatures are expected to range from:

4–8°C in northern interior regions,

8–10°C in southern interior areas, and

10–14°C in other parts of the state.

Residents are advised to take precautions against the cold as winter continues to grip Odisha.
