Bhubaneswar, Dec 9: A severe cold wave is expected to sweep across Odisha till December 12, with biting winds likely to intensify discomfort, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Weather experts predict a slight rise in minimum temperatures from December 13.

On December 9 (Tuesday), cold-wave conditions are likely in Sundargarh, Angul and Jharsuguda. The Met Centre has also warned of dense fog in Sundargarh and Kandhamal. G. Udayagiri recorded sub-5°C temperatures for the second consecutive night, with the mercury dipping to 4.3°C on Sunday. Bhubaneswar and Cuttack recorded minimum temperatures of 11.9°C and 11.8°C respectively.

Senior agrometeorologist Prof. Surendranath Pashupalak said cold conditions are expected to persist across the state till December 20. Night temperatures in northern interior districts (Sundargarh, Jharsuguda), western Odisha (from Sambalpur to Nabarangpur) and adjoining regions are likely to remain unchanged. A slight rise in temperatures is expected only after December 21.

Coastal districts—from Balasore to Ganjam—and adjoining districts such as Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Nayagarh and Gajapati may experience a further drop in night temperatures on December 11.
