Severe gas scarcity threatens thousands of busy city eateries
Severe disruptions in cooking gas supplies have forced roughly one-fifth of eateries in India's financial capital to halt their kitchen operations. Facing an unprecedented commercial LPG shortage, Mumbai's hospitality sector is scrambling to keep stoves burning. Industry representatives from AHAR caution that nearly half of all local food businesses might have to pull their shutters down within the next forty-eight hours if fuel deliveries do not resume normally.
Currently, no blanket mandate exists for restaurants to close. Individual owners are simply running out of cylinder stock, leaving them with no choice but to limit menus or suspend services entirely.
Middle Eastern conflicts are directly responsible for this sudden scarcity. Routine shipping routes, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz, remain blocked due to rising regional hostilities. This creates a massive bottleneck for India, which heavily depends on overseas markets like Saudi Arabia for over sixty percent of its total liquid petroleum gas requirements. Because global shipments are severely delayed, domestic reserves are feeling the intense strain.
Federal authorities have swiftly intervened to protect household consumers. Officials are instructing oil refineries to boost their output by utilizing petrochemical streams, ensuring families do not face sudden fuel cutoffs for their daily cooking. Consequently, administrators extended the mandatory wait period between domestic cylinder bookings from twenty-one to twenty-five days to discourage panic buying and black-market hoarding.
With household needs prioritized, market-priced commercial gas for the hospitality industry has taken a major hit. To address the mounting panic among business owners, the oil ministry recently established a special committee. Three executive directors from leading oil marketing firms now oversee urgent supply requests from commercial entities, hospitals, and educational facilities to mitigate the damage.
While places like Bengaluru and Mumbai are experiencing the immediate brunt of this supply crunch, restaurant owners nationwide are watching closely. If international trade routes remain compromised, the commercial LPG shortage could easily cascade into other states. Establishments outside these primary metropolitan hubs might soon face similar hurdles in securing kitchen fuel, threatening the broader food service economy until import logistics stabilize completely.
