Franchise seeks replacement following sudden exit of Bangladeshi star

In a significant development ahead of the IPL 2026 season, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) officially announced the release of Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman from their squad on Saturday. This decision comes immediately after a specific directive issued by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Sources indicate the move is linked to wider geopolitical sensitivities. While the franchise expressed its position through a formal media advisory, the decision underscores the regulator's authority over team compositions during sensitive times. KKR confirmed that the instruction to exclude Mustafizur Rahman came directly from the BCCI/IPL governing body.

BCCI Directive and Official Stance

Devajit Saikia, the BCCI Secretary, clarified the board's stance, citing "recent developments" as the primary reason for the instruction. Speaking to the media, Saikia explained that given the current situation unfolding across the region, the board felt it necessary to instruct the Kolkata franchise to part ways with the Bangladeshi speedster.

"Due to the recent developments which is going on all across, BCCI has instructed the franchise KKR to release one of their players Mustafizur Rahman of Bangladesh from their squad," Saikia stated.

Political Context and Auction History

Mustafizur’s initial inclusion in the squad had generated significant conversation and political backlash. This reaction was largely fueled by reports regarding the treatment of Hindu minorities in Bangladesh, leading to questions about his selection for the Indian league.

The left-arm pacer was a high-profile purchase for the two-time champions. During the IPL auction held in December, KKR secured his services for a massive sum of Rs 9.20 crore. However, due to the board's intervention, he will not feature in the upcoming season.

Replacement Strategy

KKR management assured fans that the process was carried out following all due consultations. The BCCI has authorized the franchise to sign a replacement player to fill the void left by Mustafizur. The franchise noted that details regarding the new player will be shared with the public soon, ensuring the team remains competitive for the 2026 title race.
