Odisha crime branch will probe Saheed-Nagar gang-rape case

Bhubaneswar, December 21:The Commissionerate Police have escalated the investigation into the alleged gang rape of a 17-year-old girl in Saheed Nagar, marking it as a “red flag” priority case. Responsibility for the probe has been handed over to the Crime Branch, with its Director General personally supervising progress.

The survivor was reportedly lured from her hometown to Bhubaneswar under the pretext of a data entry job. On December 18, around 2 p.m., she was taken to a rented flat in Saheed Nagar, where two men allegedly assaulted her.Later that day, she managed to escape and, on December 19, lodged a formal complaint at Saheed Nagar Police Station.

The case has been registered under Section 70(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (gang rape) and Section 6 of the POCSO Act. Both accused were swiftly arrested and produced before the court.

Forensic experts and the crime scene unit have examined the flat, collecting crucial evidence. Deputy Commissioner of Police Jagmohan Meena stated that the “red flag” designation ensures senior-level monitoring and expedited procedures.

This case comes just days after another reported gang rape of a minor near Dhauli on December 10, which remains under investigation.
