Strategic deal focuses on power semiconductors for automotive sector.

India’s ambition to become a global hub for chip manufacturing has taken a significant leap forward. In a major development for the tech sector, a strategic Tata Electronics ROHM partnership has been finalized to produce high-tech semiconductors within the country. This collaboration brings together the precision of Japanese technology and the rapidly expanding manufacturing capabilities of the Tata Group.

Combining Strengths for Local Production

The core objective of this alliance is to establish a robust framework for manufacturing power semiconductors. Under this agreement, ROHM will provide its advanced device technology from Japan, while Tata Electronics will handle the complex assembly and testing processes.

Both companies plan to leverage their respective sales networks to identify new customers and deliver superior technological solutions. This move is expected to not only serve the domestic market but also strengthen the bond between the semiconductor industries of India and Japan.

Focus on Automotive Innovation

Work is already underway to get the production lines moving. As an initial step, Tata Electronics will begin assembling and testing a specific automotive component designed by ROHM. This power-saving part is crucial for modern vehicles, with shipments to customers expected to begin by next year. Looking ahead, the partners also intend to collaborate on advanced packaging technologies.

Supporting 'Make in India'

This venture aligns perfectly with the Indian government's "Make in India" vision. By creating a complete ecosystem—from design to manufacturing—the partnership aims to ensure a steady, reliable supply of electronics.

Randhir Thakur, CEO and MD of Tata Electronics, highlighted the importance of this deal. He noted that their facilities will deliver chip packaging services to support ROHM, creating products tailored for both Indian and global markets. Similarly, Kazuhide Ino of ROHM expressed confidence that this collaboration will help build a sustainable supply chain to meet the growing demand for domestically produced semiconductors.

Currently, Tata Electronics is also constructing India's first large-scale chip fabrication plant in Gujarat and a testing facility in Assam, marking a massive investment in the country's technological future.
