New Delhi, Dec 19: Security has been tightened at the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi following violent protests in Bangladesh after the death of prominent leader Sharif Osman Hadi, a senior police official said on Friday.

The official said security arrangements at the Bangladesh High Commission have been intensified.

Tension escalated across Bangladesh after Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus confirmed Hadi’s death in a televised address, sparking widespread protests, vandalism and attacks late Thursday night.

Hadi, a senior leader of the student protest group Inquilab Mancha that emerged from the 2024 uprising, was shot while campaigning for the upcoming national elections in Dhaka.

Confirming his death, Yunus addressed the nation, saying, “I come before you today with heartbreaking news. Sharif Osman Hadi, the fearless frontline fighter of the July Uprising and spokesperson of Inquilab Mancha, is no longer among us.”

Violence erupted across the country early Friday following Hadi’s death, with reports of attacks on media offices, street clashes and widespread unrest. Protesters also allegedly hurled stones at the Indian mission in Chattogram amid the escalating turmoil.

Meanwhile, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha said on Friday that his government remains prepared to handle any situation arising from the unrest in neighbouring Bangladesh.

“We all know the circumstances under which elected Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had to leave the country. After her ouster, fundamentalists, criminals and thieves were released from jails. What we had anticipated is now unfolding in the neighbouring country,” Saha told reporters, according to news agency ANI.
