Supreme Court Notices Karisma Kapoor Over Plea for Divorce Details

Priya demands divorce records to settle property inheritance disputes

The legal battle surrounding the massive estate of late industrialist Sunjay Kapur has taken a new turn involving Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor. On Friday, the Supreme Court of India issued a formal notice to the actress following an application filed by Priya Kapur. Priya, who is Sunjay Kapur's widow, is legally requesting access to certified copies of the 2016 divorce proceedings between Karisma and the late business tycoon.

Justice A.S. Chandurkar, presiding over the in-chamber proceeding, has directed Karisma Kapoor to file her response to this request within two weeks. The core of the issue lies in the high-stakes estate dispute currently pending before the Delhi High Court. Priya Kapur contends that reviewing the complete records of the divorce—specifically the settlement terms regarding finances and custody—is crucial for a fair resolution of the property case.

According to Priya’s legal team, questions about financial arrangements for the children, educational expenses, and other post-divorce obligations frequently surface during the estate litigation. They argue that the current dispute cannot be properly adjudicated without understanding exactly what was agreed upon during Sunjay Kapur’s lifetime. The goal is to determine if the financial demands now being raised by Karisma’s side were already covered in the original separation agreement.

This legal maneuver is part of a broader and bitter family conflict over Sunjay Kapur’s personal estate, which is estimated to be worth around Rs 30,000 crore. The children from his marriage to Karisma Kapoor have staked a claim in the property, alleging that the will, which favours Priya Sachdev Kapur, may have been tampered with. Sunjay Kapur passed away in 2016 following a heart attack in the UK.
