Bhubaneswar, Nov 22: A cyclonic circulation near the Strait of Malacca is expected to develop into a low-pressure area by Saturday and may intensify into a depression on November 24, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Despite the system’s growth, no rainfall forecast has been issued for Odisha until November 26–27.

Weather expert Prof. Surendranath Pasupalak said the system could form a clear low-pressure area by Saturday morning and may turn into a depression over the south Andaman Sea on the 24th, moving west-northwest. It is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm (Sen-Yar) by November 26 and could strengthen further into a severe cyclone around November 28. Models also indicate that by November 29–30, it may become a very severe cyclone over the southwest and west-central Bay of Bengal.

He added that the system could move towards the Andhra–Odisha coasts due to a strong anticyclonic belt from the western Pacific to Myanmar guiding its path. While it is too early to pinpoint landfall timing or location, Odisha is likely to receive rainfall, and farmers are advised to remain alert.

International weather model ECMWF suggests a possible landfall around December 1 between Gopalpur and Paradip.
