Bhubaneswar, Feb 27: In a moment of immense pride for Odisha, Captain Arun Kar (Retd.), a UK-based Odia entrepreneur, was formally recognised at the United Nations Headquarters in New York for his exceptional humanitarian work. The recognition came for his sustained efforts in advancing dignity, public health, sanitation, gender equity, and sustainable development. Arun Kar, son of Prof. Manoranjan Kar and Mrs. Rashmi Rekha Kar, stood as a beacon of not only professional achievement but also as a proud representative of Odisha, reflecting the values instilled by his family and cultural heritage.

The honour was conferred in the presence of distinguished figures such as Ambassador Luis Suarez Hernández, Representative of the United Nations, and Dr. Barkha Versha, Chairperson of the United Nations Global Peace Council (UNGPC). Arun Kar received a Certificate of Appreciation for his work aligned with key United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequality), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). The recognition highlighted his work driven by responsibility and impact, rather than the pursuit of accolades.

Over the past year, Arun Kar, along with his wife Nidhi Kar and partners from India and the United Kingdom, has spearheaded several community-driven initiatives that directly contribute to the UN SDGs. His efforts include enhancing sanitation and menstrual hygiene support for tribal girls in Odisha, providing seasonal food and clothing relief to vulnerable communities in Uttarakhand, supporting women’s empowerment in competitive sports in the UK, and fostering diaspora unity through structured sports engagement. Additionally, he advanced cultural diplomacy with the Global South Maritime Heritage Summit – Bali Jatra UK 2025, hosted at the House of Lords, and promoted environmental sustainability through the Earthnest mission, which focuses on addressing plastic pollution.

These initiatives have reinforced SDGs focused on health, equality, environmental stewardship, and inclusive growth, reflecting a commitment to both local development and international collaboration. Arun Kar’s recognition at the United Nations is a testament to his dedication to driving global progress in a responsible and sustainable manner.

Earlier in February 2026, Arun Kar was also honoured at the New York Times Award 2026, an international forum hosted by the United Nations Global Peace Council in collaboration with UNGM and UNSDG. This prestigious event convened global leaders, diplomats, and professionals to discuss sustainable development, responsible innovation, and cross-border collaboration.

A former Indian Army officer and survivor of the 1999 Odisha Super Cyclone, Arun Kar’s journey is a reflection of resilience, adversity, and service. From securing an All-India Rank of 152 in the UPSC Combined Defence Services Examination to becoming a British entrepreneur and global development advocate, his journey connects local roots with international engagement. Through his active participation in global policy dialogues, Arun Kar continues to highlight that technology, enterprise, and humanitarian responsibility must progress hand in hand to ensure a better future for all.
