Intense winter chills grip the state as temperatures drop significantly

The winter chill has officially set in across the state, bringing biting cold and foggy mornings to several districts. According to the latest bulletin released by the Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar, for November 28, 2025, dry weather is currently prevailing across the region, but temperatures have taken a sharp nose-dive in interior pockets.

Record Lows in Hill Stations and Plains

The severity of the cold is most evident in G. Udayagiri, which has emerged as the coldest spot in the state. This hill station saw mercury levels plummet to a shivering 5.4°C. In the plains, Phulbani continues to be the coldest town, recording a minimum temperature of 8.5°C. Daringbadi also reported a chilly night, matching Phulbani with a minimum of 8.5°C. On the other end of the spectrum, Malkangiri remained the warmest location in the state, registering a maximum temperature of 30.3°C.

Cold Wave Alert

A significant development in today’s weather update is the onset of cold wave conditions. The IMD report highlights that isolated pockets in the districts of Angul and Jharsuguda are experiencing a severe cold wave. Data shows that Jharsuguda recorded a low of 9.2°C, while Angul stood at 9.6°C. Both stations have seen a departure of more than 5 degrees below their normal averages, indicating an intense cold snap in the industrial belt.

Fog and Visibility

Alongside the dropping temperatures, fog has started to disrupt daily life. Phulbani reported dense fog, with visibility ranging between 50 to 200 meters. Meanwhile, moderate fog conditions were observed in Rourkela and Bhawanipatna, reducing visibility to between 200 and 500 meters.

Major Cities Update

The Twin Cities are also feeling the winter arrival, though conditions are milder compared to the western districts. The capital city, Bhubaneswar, recorded a minimum temperature of 14.3°C with a comfortable daytime high of 28.2°C. Cuttack was slightly cooler during the night, registering a low of 13.6°C. Elsewhere, towns like Sundargarh (11.2°C) and Keonjhar (11.8°C) are also witnessing chilly nights as winter settles in.
