Titilagarh, Oct 18: In a major cash seizure, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) recovered Rs 2 crore in cash from two individuals at Titlagarh Junction railway station in Odisha late last night and detained them for questioning.

The incident has raised eyebrows, especially in the backdrop of the upcoming Nuapada by-election.

According to sources, the two individuals were travelling on the TATA-LAP Express from Kesinga station and were carrying a black suitcase. The RPF personnel became suspicious upon noticing the bag and stopped the duo for questioning.

During questioning, the individuals admitted to carrying cash but claimed they were unaware of the exact amount. Upon checking the suitcase, officials discovered the cash, which totaled Rs 2 crore after counting.

While the individuals have been detained for further questioning, the source and purpose of the money remain unclear.

Speculation is rife that the cash may be linked to the Nuapada bypolls, though no political party has been officially linked to the incident yet.

RPF sources also confirmed that on Thursday, they had earlier seized Rs 20 lakh from the station, raising concerns about the increasing movement of unaccounted cash in the region.

Further investigations are underway to trace the origin and intended destination of the seized amount, and to determine whether more individuals are involved.
