Sambalpur, Dec 22: Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) successfully conducted a comprehensive combined mock drill at Kulda Opencast Project (OCP) of Basundhara Area to assess and strengthen its disaster preparedness and emergency response systems.

The mock drill was conducted jointly by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnels and the Mine Rescue Team from Mines Rescue Station, Orient Area, focusing specifically on handling water-related emergencies in mining operations.

The simulated emergency scenario involved two pump operators reportedly drowning in the mid sump area—one conscious and the other missing. Upon receiving the alert, emergency protocols were immediately activated and an integrated rescue operation commenced without delay.

The rescue teams working in seamless coordination with Kulda OCP officials, carried out a swift, well-coordinated and systematic search and rescue operation. Both workers were successfully traced, safely rescued and brought to the surface within the stipulated time frame. Immediate first aid and medical attention were provided to the rescued individuals as part of the standard emergency response protocol.

MCL officials, rescue teams and support staff, actively participated in the exercise, underlining MCL’s commitment to ensuring the highest standards of mine safety and preparedness.

This exercise effectively demonstrated MCL’s robust disaster management planning, rapid mobilization capability and the efficiency of its coordinated response system. MCL remains steadfast to strengthening safety standards across all its operational areas and continues to prioritize the well-being of its workforce by reinforcing robust disaster management systems and proactive preparedness.
