Odisha Winter Update: Dense Fog and Chilly Nights to Persist

Winter has intensified its hold over Odisha, with the Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar predicting a week of shivering temperatures and heavy fog. The latest Odisha Winter Update indicates that while the sky may remain clear and dry, the combination of cold winds and morning mist will significantly impact daily life across the state.

Coldest Districts and Temperature Trends

The mercury has taken a sharp dive, particularly in the western and southern belts. Jharsuguda recorded the lowest temperature in the plains at 6.8°C, making it the coldest urban pocket. However, the high-altitude regions are feeling the bite even more; the Koraput hill station recorded a minimum of 6.1°C.

In the Twin Cities, the chill is slightly more moderate but still noticeable. Bhubaneswar recorded a minimum temperature of 13.6°C, while Cuttack followed closely at 13.4°C. On the warmer side, Paralakhemundi saw the state's highest maximum temperature reaching 28.6°C.

Thick Fog Alerts for Travelers

Commuters and drivers should exercise extreme caution over the next few days. The IMD has issued a multi-day alert for shallow to moderate fog in several districts, including Sambalpur, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, and Kandhamal.

Visibility has already become a major concern in specific areas:

  • Very Dense Fog: Rourkela reported visibility below 50 meters.
  • Dense Fog: Visibility dropped between 50 to 200 meters in Sambalpur, Hirakud, Sonepur, Jharsuguda, Dhenkanal, and Phulbani.
  • Moderate to Shallow Fog: Districts like Koraput, Bhawanipatna, and Baripada are experiencing visibility ranging from 200 to 1000 meters.

Seven-Day Weather Outlook

According to the meteorological center, there will be no significant change in the minimum (night) temperatures across Odisha for the next seven days. The weather is expected to remain dry, but the morning fog will likely be a recurring feature until the end of December. Residents are advised to keep warm and plan early morning travel with extra time to account for low visibility.
